Year tree

Year tree got it's name from the year number with cross mark written at the side of the tree. According to traditional knowledge the tree stood next to a small road leading from Hevoshuuhdinsuo swamp to Huuhilonkylä village which was used to carry cut hay for the animal feed during the winter.

During the winter 1728 the man bringing hay for the farm animals tipped his sleigh and got stuck underneath it. He did manage to take off his belt and tie it in the neck of his dog. The dog ran all the way home to Huuhilo farm with belt around his neck, and when the other people of the house realized the dog with his masters belt, they understood the stress and went back to help the man in trouble. Unfortunately the man could not be saved, but to respect his memory, people carved the year number to the tree which stood next to the tragic event site.

Near by there is also a pond named as year pond. The location is about 8 km to North-West from Huuhilo farm in the vicinity between Niikkulanaho and Keljänsuo. The tree is still standing and reminds us of the time when communication means were a bit different and when getting by every day took hard work.
